THUNDERER'S WOMEN

Open Women’s

2017 was the first season for our Open Women’s side. They played in the SAWFL (SA Women’s Football League) in division 6 which included a few Hill’s league teams. The girls were nearly all new to AFL however they developed into a strong and determined team who just missed out on playing finals however came out the top team amongst the Hill’s teams. The club is very proud of these girls who played in the inaugural female football team for the club. They are ably coached by Bernie Hegarty and assistant Brian “Pud” Morgan.

4 of the girls in the 2017 season are daughters of footballers who played in the first season for the club back in 1986.

U16 Girls

2017 was the first season for our U16 girls’ team. It was quite ambitious for our club to launch a female football competition with 2 teams and we certainly found that attracting enough girls for this side was a significant challenge.  That being said the girls who played in this team were the most keen we have seen in our junior sides and worked so very hard all season against tough opposition in the SANFL southern competition. While they did not win any games they never gave up and once the season was over they were already wanting to start training well before Christmas. They are coached by Dave Farmer who has been involved in coaching juniors for the club and he is assisted by a number of parents. In 2018 the U16 competition will be run by the HFL, and while it will be a smaller competition we know our girls will put in a great effort and we believe they will get some well-deserved wins.
